Reports

Report by Ben Parry

Ed and I made our long awaited debut at Bush Bash in London, as far as I was concerned as long as I pulled a unique Vandal Savage then it would be a good day!

My joy was short lived though when there was no Savage, no Mister Miracle, no Question (!), the Shazam figure got pulled by someone with their first booster, and I released that that would be it for the "Chase".

But I did get that stupid Amanda Waller pog (how little did I know!!!)

I did pull a Stripe, who looks like a nice figure, but dies a little way into his dial, I got others but nothing of amazing.

I settled on a team of Stripe, R Cyborg Superman, E Catman, and Amanda Waller, and just for a laugh included the Critical Strike BFC, just on the off chance I rolled a Double 6.

The less said about the first game, the better!! Needless to say my first opponent was one of the eventual finalists (Andrew), who managed to do that sneaky trick of killing all my players without taking any damage against his!!! However he couldnt kill my pog, although that was because he just moved Triplicate Girl next to her, and the "Protected the Innocent"! - I dont like that card!

However after this my luck took an up-turn! Robbie, had managed to pull 2 Vandal Savages, and after a series of Critical Misses in his first game with one he was happy to trade the other away for an Omac LE, so two happy people!!

In my second game I faced off against Mark, and his team of Mr Miracle, Wonder Girl and Steel! After seeing off my Cyborg and Catman, Mark was looking well placed to hand me my second defeat of the day, and after a succession of unsuccessful attacks against Stripe, he finally managed to get through with a Critical Hit, and the card had all six tokens on it (!), which worked out much better then the 2 damage that would have normally done!!

Poor old Waller was left by herself, although little did I know that a pog, with willpower, 6 range, and two targets was about to hand me my finest victory ever (well for a while anyway!!).

One by one she systematically killed off her opponents, although Mark constantly pushing to try and kill her may have helped (!), but in the end, the pog out lived them all!!

Mark was very gracious in defeat, although I did notice in his next game, he went straight after the pog!!!

Game three was always fun, as for like the 6th tournament in a row, I ended up playing Ed, in a battle of bragging rights on the journey home! My voodoo magic seemed to be working as Ed again couldnt come to terms with superior dice rolls, and I finally managed to use the critical hit card, and inflict a nice 6 damage on him, to win the game.

Ordinarily I would have been overjoyed about making the final 8, but I drew Andrew again, who proceeded to show me that his first victory was no fluke, and he soundly thrashed me, by exactly the same margin in the first game.....but he never killed my pog, so I am claiming a moral victory!

All in all a good afternoons game play, made even better by me being able to hear the final five minutes of the Spurs game on the radio!!

Many thanks to everyone at Bush Bash, and I look forward to attending more events there.

Notes on New Set

Rob E Comments

Rookie Mon-El is just what the Legion has been looking for -- a flying hypersonic brick for less than 120 points. With wilcard.

And while we're talking 31st century, how vicious is Rookie Mano? 33 points, but your high point brick can't afford to ignore a 3 damage exploit weakness sitting next to him.

No matter how I tried I couldn't quite get R Wildcat on my team, but he looks fierce, and from the look of it the E and V are fiercer. I fielded Rookie Phantom Lady instead (I pulled a lot of rookies) and she's nice and solid for her points too.

And the sculpts! Hawkman! Mon-El again! Knockout! Sure there are a few duds (and shame that two big names had to suffer them (GL and Martian Manhunter)) but from what I've seen the rest are really nice. I was just sat here thinking that one way to judge how could the sculpts are in a set is to look at capes. Hypertime gave us the awfulness of Superman's cape that looked like you needed superstrength to wear (and Gorilla Grodd's was worse), while I'm sat here looking at the more dynamic poses of Steel, Mon-El and Mr Miracle. Nice.

Only two minor quibbles really. I don't like the new "flesh-coloured" plastic. Hawkman and Knockout for example, great sculpts, somewhat spoiled by looking just a bit too pink. And I really really don't like this on-going thing of names ALL IN CAPS. Makes names much harder to spot when churning through my collection looking for a specific figure.

But to end back in the far more overwhelmingly positiveness I have, can I just finish with: Booster with Skeets! (and Mon-El! Again!)
